In 1978, Jain became a professor at UC Davis. He was known for his contributions to "two-dimensional stochastic models for images providing a firm theoretical foundation for a number of algorithms of spectral analysis, adaptive image estimation and image data compression," including work on transform coding for image compression and, in particular, block-based motion compensation for video compression.
In 1983, Jain received the IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award. In 1988, Jain was recognized as a Fellow of the IEEE.
In 1990, the Mohini Jain Family Foundation established the Anil Jain Memorial Prize to honor the late Professor Anil Jain. The prize is awarded annually to the best Ph.D. student dissertation in the ECE department.
