Dr. Ford explores signal and image processing algorithms. His recent work in communications signal processing involved the development and performance analysis of algorithms for multiuser detection of continuous phase modulation signals. An optimum multiuser receiver was developed for detecting asynchronous partial-response PAM signals, generalizing two previously-published receiver algorithms. Another project involved the application of methods of unsupervised pattern recognition to the problem of automatic target cueing (ATC) in hyper-spectral images. An algorithm was developed to extract spatial clusters of spectrally related pixels having specified and distinctive spatial characteristics. It provided an alternative to classical ATC algorithms based on anomaly detection, in which pixels are classified as type anomaly” or background clutter”.
