Ph.D. Student Gengchen Liu Awarded Best Student Paper Prize at the 2020 OSA Advanced Photonic Congress

image of studentCongratulations to Gengchen Liu, advised by Professor S.J. Ben Yoo, for winning the Best Student Paper Prize at the 2020 OSA Advanced Photonics Congress for the topical meeting in Photonics in Switching and Computing. The paper is titled, "3D-Hyper-FleX-LIONS: A Flat and Reconfigurable Hyper-X Network for Hyperscale Datacenters".

Gengchen and his coauthors proposed an innovative optical interconnect architecture for future Exascale data center and HPC systems that leverages photonic integrated circuits designed and fabricated in UC Davis laboratories. The architecture can deliver the same network performance of current state-of-art architectures while providing significant savings (more than 3×) in terms of power consumption and hardware resources. Below is a figure of the proposed architectures, and full details of the award winning paper can be found by clicking the links above.
