Ralph Algazi Receives Distinguished Emeriti Award

Ralph Algazi

Distinguished Professor Ralph Algazi has received the 2023-2024 Distinguished Emeriti Award from the UC Davis Emeriti Association.

The annual award recognizes outstanding scholarly work or service performed by a UC Davis Academic Senate member after retirement, with nominations made by the association and university leadership, from department chairs to the provost. Among his many accomplishments, the association brought special attention to his advancements in multimedia signal processing and his efforts to improve understanding of human interaction with technology.

"When he became an emeritus professor in 1994, Ralph's research centered on the use of properties of human perception in the design of processing algorithms for the display, transmission, and storage of images and speech. Such human-focused designs played a significant role over the last few decades in how humans and technology interact," said André Knoesen, Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Algazi's nominator for the award.

Algazi was one of two emeriti professors from the College of Engineering at the University of California, Davis, to receive the award.
